Getting Started
Common questions from new students and parents.
Do I need experience to start?
No. You do not need any previous Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo or martial arts experience. Beginners are welcome and introduced to the fundamentals step-by-step.
What if I have never done martial arts before?
That's completely normal. Many students begin with no martial arts background. Our training is structured to help you learn progressively while developing confidence, fitness and practical skills.
Can I try Island Flow before choosing a monthly package?
Yes. New students can submit a First-Time Trial request through our Book Training page. We'll contact you to confirm availability and provide the details for your first class.
What should I wear for my first class?
Comfortable athletic clothing is fine for your first class unless we advise you otherwise when confirming your training. As you continue, we'll explain the appropriate uniform and training gear for your classes.
Do I need to be fit before starting BJJ?
No. You can begin at your current fitness level. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo themselves provide challenging physical training, and your conditioning can develop as you train consistently.
