What to wear to your first BJJ class at Island Flow Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Walking into your first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class can feel a little intimidating, especially if you have never trained in martial arts before. The good news is that you don’t need expensive equipment or a full BJJ uniform just to get started.

For your first class, the most important thing is to wear comfortable athletic clothing that allows you to move freely. At Island Flow Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, we want beginners to be able to experience training before worrying about purchasing all their gear.

What Should You Wear for Your First BJJ Class?

For your first class, wear a comfortable T-shirt or athletic top along with athletic shorts. Your clothing should fit securely and allow you to move, bend, squat and train comfortably.

Shorts are generally the easiest option. Try to avoid clothing with large zippers, sharp pieces, bulky pockets or anything that could become uncomfortable while training with a partner.

If you’re completely new to Bahamas Martial Arts, don’t worry about showing up with specialized BJJ clothing on day one. Clean, comfortable athletic clothing is enough to get started.

What Should You Bring to BJJ?

You really don’t need much for your first class. We recommend bringing:

  • Athletic shorts – comfortable shorts that allow you to move freely.
  • A T-shirt or athletic top – something clean, comfortable and suitable for exercise.
  • Slippers or slides – wear these whenever you leave the training mats.
  • A bottle of water – BJJ is a workout, so staying hydrated is important.
  • An extra towel – useful for drying off after training.

That’s really all you need to experience your first class.

Do I Need a BJJ Gi for My First Class?

Not necessarily. If you’re trying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for the first time, you can start in appropriate athletic clothing unless you have been specifically told that your class requires a gi.

Once you decide to continue training, your coach can explain what equipment you’ll need and the academy’s Uniform Policy. This helps ensure everyone trains in clothing that is appropriate, safe and suitable for the type of class being taught.

Why Should I Bring Slippers?

This is one of the small things new students sometimes overlook.

BJJ is practiced barefoot on the mats, but you should never walk around bathrooms, outside areas or other off-mat spaces barefoot and then step back onto the training surface.

Keeping slippers or slides beside the mat helps keep the training environment clean for everyone.

Should I Bring Water?

Definitely. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can be physically demanding, even during a beginner class. Bring your own bottle of water so you can hydrate during designated breaks.

You may also want to bring a small extra towel, particularly if you sweat heavily.

What Should You NOT Wear to BJJ?

Avoid jeans, belts, jewelry and clothing with sharp or hard accessories. Watches, necklaces, bracelets and similar items should also be removed before training.

Your fingernails and toenails should be trimmed, and you should arrive wearing clean training clothes. Good personal hygiene is an important part of being a good training partner.

What Happens After Your First Class?

Your first class is about experiencing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and seeing whether the training environment is right for you. You aren’t expected to know the techniques, terminology or rules before walking through the door.

If you decide that you want to continue, our coaches can help you understand the appropriate training gear, class schedule and what to expect as you progress.
